We are just over 24 hours away from Iron Mike Tyson’s return to boxing when he faces infamous YouTuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul. There is a 31-year age gap between the two fighters, Tyson age 58, and Paul age 27; setting a record in professional boxing. There are several unique format changes to accommodate the odd matchup. Below is everything you need to know before the bell rings tomorrow night.
The fight is sanctioned.
First, this fight is not an exhibition and will, therefore, count towards both fighters’ professional records, a move that both Mike Tyson and Jake Paul reportedly advocated for. Tyson has been retired for nearly 20 years with a record of 50-6 and 44 knockouts. Paul has a professional record of 10-1, five of his wins against never before boxers.
There are special rules.
Given the unconventional nature of the fight, it is to be expected that some rules might be tweaked to account for certain things (like the elder status of a certain someone *cough cough*). To start, 14-ounce gloves will be used instead of the standard 10-ounce gloves—the 14 oz. gloves are standard for sparring and reduce the impact of punches.
Next, shorter and fewer rounds. Instead of 10 or 12 three-minute rounds, the fight is set for eight two-minute rounds. Even if this fight goes the distance it’ll be a quick one.
Sports Betting
Jake Paul is currently the favorite, but betting has been prohibited in seven states due to the untraditional nature of the event, including New York, Colorado, and Pennsylvania.
Event Details.
The event will occur on Friday, November 15th, beginning at 8 PM EST at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Netflix will be streaming the event to its 282 million subscribers for no extra cost. This marks the first live combat sports broadcast for the streaming giant, which has plans to continue its ventures into the world of sports with two NFL games streaming on Christmas day.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
That’s everything you need to know for fight night tomorrow. Make sure your Netflix subscription is renewed and keep an eye on social media as the world reacts to this highly anticipated, highly controversial, once-in-a-lifetime bout.
