The New York Football Giants are 2-8 on the season and currently hold the number one pick in the upcoming draft which could be an opportunity to start from scratch with a new QB. Fans are beyond frustrated and are calling for major changes to be made. At the heart of the disgruntled conversation is Mr. $160 Mil Daniel Jones, whose performance and large contract have become a major issue for the front office and the fanbase. If that wasn’t enough to get you to bench the guy, maybe $23 million is?
Daniel Jones has a $23 million injury guarantee in his contract which states should he suffer an injury that keeps him from passing a physical in March, a clause would kick in and force the Giants to pay him a pretty penny in 2025. This is very common in high-paid quarterbacks and have seen similar preventative situations play out in Denver with Russell Wilson and Derek Carr in Vegas.
Head Coach Brian Daboll has been supportive of his quarterback throughout the season but as the team continues to struggle, it becomes hard to maintain that stance, especially with his own job potentially in danger. General Manager Joe Schoen says that any decision on Jones playing or not will strictly be a “football decision” and not based on the stipulations in Jones’ contract.
New York is on BYE this week, giving the entire organization a chance to breathe after being dismantled through the first half of their season. Once the breath has been caught, some serious evaluation of the current state of the Giants should follow. The Giants would absorb $22 million in dead money in 2025 should they release Jones, but considering the star-studded QB class in the upcoming draft, replacing Jones with a cheaper, younger, potentially more capable signal caller should make the penalty worth it.
The Giants notoriously signed Daniel Jones to a four-year $160 Million contract that played a large part in why the Giants were unable to pay star running back Saquon Barkley, who is now thriving in Philly while the Giants pay for their mistakes, literally. There is no more guaranteed money to be paid to Jones except if the injury clause should trigger, so seems like a no-brainer to me.
It’s time for the Giants to stop the bleeding and move on from the era of Danny Dimes.
