The Bills got off to a hot 3-0 start to the season and it seemed like OC Joe Brady’s “everyone eats” offense could once again lead the Bills to the top of their division. That was until Buffalo ran into the Ravens and Texans for back-to-back losses.
What became clear for the Bills was that the lack of a clear number one playmaker was proving costly against formidable opponents and in tight contests. Tuesday morning, Buffalo seemingly solved this fundamental issue, putting them back in position to compete and win in the postseason, by acquiring five-time pro-bowl WR Amari Cooper.
Trade Details
Bills Receive
WR Amari Cooper
2025 sixth-round pick
Browns Receive
2025 third-round pick
2026 seventh-round pick
What does this mean going forward?
Cooper joins a youthful but promising wide receiver core alongside Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman, and becomes the number one option for an MVP-caliber QB, instead of catching passes from the overwhelmingly disappointing QB in Cleveland.
The acquisition directly counters the Jets acquisition of Davante Adams without breaking the bank and has a better shelf life. Rodgers is old (40 years), no way around it. He also tends to take a beating from time to time. In short, Rodgers doesn’t have a lot of time left in this role and the Jets don’t seem to be looking past their on nose on that front. Devante is not afraid to voice his frustration so how do you keep him happy after Rodger’s retires?
On the other hand, Cooper is now the veteran presence in a young WR room and should lead the team in targets by the end of the season. He also is now playing alongside a true franchise QB who is currently playing the best football of his career, with no end in sight, considering Josh Allen is only 28.
This trade has brightened Buffalo’s future significantly and granted a enhanced career outlook for Cooper. Expect the Bills to reignite the flame that carried them to a 3-0 start after this trade and a win over their divisional rival Jets on Monday Night Football.
The Bills take on the Titans at 1:00PM on Sunday afternoon, it is currently unclear if Cooper will suit up for Buffalo.
