Last night at the NFL Honors ceremony, it was announced that Josh Allen was declared the NFL’s Most Valuable Player of the 2024 NFL Season. This is Allen’s first NFL MVP Award in his career and he’s the first Buffalo Bills quarterback to win the MVP Award and third Buffalo Bills player to do so in franchise history right behind two legendary Bills running backs in OJ Simpson and Thurman Thomas. But how did Allen capture this year’s MVP Award? Let’s divide right in the season that he had leading up to the taking home the NFL MVP Award.

Voted as the most overrated quarterback by his peers in the offseason

Back in the offseason, a poll came out among NFL players voting who were the top quarterbacks and best players in the league. However for Allen he didn’t receive any praise from his peers in any of those categories, instead he was voted in a category that made everyone in Buffalo and the national media jump out of their seats as he was voted as the most overrated quarterback in the league. Now reason being on why he was voted as the most overrated quarterback by his peers was because the turnovers that Allen had since the moment he enter the league. Allen had the most votes on the most overrated quarterback list with the total being eleven votes being above Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa being tied with ten votes.

Breaking records and making NFL history throughout the season

In a season where Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills were supposed to be in a rebuild year after cornerstone players in previous seasons like Stefon Diggs, Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, Tre’Davious White, Mitch Morse and Gabriel Davis. Folks in the national media thought that the Bills didn’t much firepower on offense and defense to compete with teams in the AFC and the AFC East who has talent on both sides of the ball and also thought that Allen was going to be lost without a star wideout receiver on the field. Allen and the Bills silenced the doubters in a heartbeat, with Allen evaluating his team and his game to a new level he made Buffalo still being look as the one of the best teams in the league and being consider as an Super Bowl contender. But throughout the course of the 2024 NFL Season, Josh Allen broke records and made NFL history along the way. Allen became the first quarterback to have a passing touchdown, receiving touchdown and rushing touchdown in the same game. He broke legendary Bills quarterback Jim Kelly for the most total touchdowns in Buffalo Bills franchise history with 245. First player to have three rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns in six total touchdowns in the same game. First player to have five consecutive seasons with 40 total touchdowns joining only Aaron Rodgers as who also did it at least five times. And the only NFL quarterback in history to beat two 15+ win teams in the same season against the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions.

Capturing his first MVP Award in his career

This year’s MVP race was a tight one between Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkely, Joe Burrow and Jared Goff. All of these players had incredible seasons and setting tone what it means to be the most valuable player of the league. But just like any race it had to come down to one winner and that person was Josh Allen. Allen received 27 votes in a tight race between him and his 2018 draft mate Lamar Jackson who received 23 votes in second place. Allen is the first quarterback who received an second team All-Pro and NFL MVP in the same season since John Elway did back in 1987. However, it was a special night for Josh Allen and his family achieving an accomplishment like this in his career. Having a tremendous speech thanking his teammates, coaches, ownership, and family. And ending his speech with a heartfelt message to the Bills Mafia, “Be good, do good. God bless, and Go Bills.” Now the next thing on Josh Allen’s list is capturing the Lombardi Trophy and solidify himself as an first ballot Hall of Famer and an all-time great quarterback, not just to the Buffalo Bills franchise, but also to the National Football League.
