“I was really nervous, I was feeling the pressure,” 18-year old Coco Gauff said after her first career win in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Despite her feelings, she showed nothing but poise and confidence against French opponent Leolia Jeanjean – from her calm demeanor to her outstanding serves.
Gauff, seeded No. 12, opened up her US Open campaign with a 6-2 and 6-3 win on Monday.
One primary reason for her success? Her ability to serve – one ball being recorded at 118 mph. She also served 8 aces, did not face any break points and 91% of first-serve points.
“Today was a good match for me,” Gauff said. “I think for the first round usually I’m nervous, but the way I played, I don’t think I felt that way.”
I think many can agree. Not only that, but No. 7 ranked Simona Halep was upset by No. 124 Daria Snigur, putting Gauff in a great position moving forward. Guaff is now the highest ranked player in her section of the draw.
Her next match will be played against Daria Saville or Elena Gabriela Ruse.
